Blinkered Belief

This is my first ever blog and quite frankly it's more of a rant (sorry about that) but what brings me to the blogisphere is what I experience a lot in life & what I have no time for...the hard of thinking...

I just heard a work colleague dispute the existence of the Big Bang.  I pointed out in simple terms that there's scientific evidence of it's existence & that they've just this week announced that they've found more information about what happened in the first second and he replied 'yeah but science is always changing it's mind isn't it'.

Now, this is annoying (& quite frankly childish but I expect that from this particularly hard of thinking person).

Firstly, what's wrong with changing your mind about something if evidence suggests that your previous opinion was incorrect or not quite on the mark, or even that it was correct but scientific knowledge has now increased our understanding of the subject?
Secondly, being stuck with the same blinkered opinions (unless those opinions are proven, incontrovertible fact) is not healthy either for yourself or human progress in general.

Now to my main rant:
Religion is responsible for holding back mankind for so long - evidence of this is numerous throughout history; scientific discoveries (Galileo Galilei is just one example), women's rights, medicinal breakthroughs, oh the list is endless, just google it!

And to those who no doubt will start the god-bothering nonsense, you're preaching to the un-convertable - unless of course scientific evidence is found to prove my current theory wrong!  (By evidence I mean facts not belief.  Belief isn't a fact it's a feeling - please learn the difference for everyone's sakes)

Science proves or disproves theories by experiments, reason, logic, intelligence etc until we know something to be true as far as our intelligence & understanding takes us at that particular time - the best thing about Science is that scientists are always trying to prove or disprove theories so that our knowledge increases about a subject matter.

Religious people hate this, it goes against everything they have been told/brainwashed into believing, hence their animosity.  And believe me, there's no-one nastier than a believer against a non-believer (or indeed against someone of a different religious persuasion), if they heard themselves from an outside perspective they'd see just how ironic it is that they treat someone with such hatred and yet preach about their peaceful beliefs.
Religion orders you to believe in god/allah/buddha/whatever & do what you're told or you'll go to 'hell' or 'jahannam' or whatever else they decide to call it.  This is a fictional place invented in religions as the stick as opposed to the carrot of 'heaven' or 'valhalla' etc.  They were quite inventive with names in the past but as they're all human and religion is man-made, they all pretty much boil down to the same thing.  Do as you're told or else we'll tell you that eternal damnation awaits you.
It shouldn't work in this day and age.  We're supposed to be educated and enlightened but it's been part of society for so long and indoctrination starts at a very early age that it looks like we're stuck with it for a long time to come too.

I wish there were less hard of thinking in the world and more individuals who think for themselves but I've learned that this is simply not the case nor is it likely to be in the near future...look at how popular tabloids are as an example.
But that's for another rant, I mean blog!
